WEAR BLACK HISTORY

In partnership with the Smithsonian African American Museum, and music journalist Naima Cochrane we created a retail pop-up, merch collection and microsite that honored six under celebrated moments in Black music history. The merch collection was inspired by the six key music moments and figures in Black music history. Distributed free at a one-day pop-up in SoHo, each item was presented against an immersive, celebratory, and informative exhibit. Elements included merch artist statements, a custom soundscape by Jeremy Toussaint, and a Spotify code that directed attendees to a playlist associated with each moment.

The Merch Line

We partnered with artists Joy Miessi and B Mike to create a merch line that was inspired by 6 under celebrated moments in Black music history.

THE 6 UNSUNG MOMENTS IN BLACK MUSIC HISTORY

  • The iconic touring and performing circuit that gave some of the biggest Black artists a platform during segregation.

  • The godmother of Rock & Roll was a queer Black woman.

  • Highlighting the Bronx as the birthplace of hiphop, and the Black Latinx rappers who were part of the movement.

  • A couple of years before QuestLove made a film about it, we honored the largest community-organized Black. music festival.

  • Celebrating one of the pioneers of Disco, a gender-fluid music legend.

  • The birth of the “Negro Spiritual”.

The Film:
